In our MIS program, students use a number of tools to learn about enterprise systems, ERP, Data Warehouses, and analytics. The student use at least three Data visualization programs so they can compare and judge which one they like and why. They start with Lumira and other SAP programs like BeX and WebI. These are cumbersome to use and not as fully developed as other software/systems they will use. They run their businesses using SAP software and then extract the data to visualize it, from procurement to inventory to sell to financial statement data.
  • SAP has built in features you would expect from a data visualization package, like easy import from other SAP systems.
  • SAP has most of the typical charts that you would expect in order to visualize your data.
  • SAP allows you to have multiple charts on one visualization for your data.
  • SAP is not as intuitive as other visualization software and you have to find an expert to show you how to do some of the simplest things.
  • SAP is still working on the package so it is in constant change, and it makes 'learning' the software more difficult than it needs to be.
  • SAP keeps renaming, re-merging, un-merging its systems so the 'Roadmap' they are so famous for is only valid for about 6 months!
It is suited for an organization that is totally invested in SAP already and does not want to spend more money for a visualization system that will more meet their needs. A complete SAP shop would be the only time I would recommend it.

I have implemented this tool across different organizations and trained users in using Lumira's visualization capabilities. It addresses inventory, production and sales problems.
  • Visualization
  • alter data structures and correlations
  • expanding the age reports involved in monthly reviews
  • Should have Excel-like pivot table drill down features
  • Integration with MS excel needs to enhance for importing data
  • Output formats are bit rigid
  • Limited functionality to manipulate data before reporting
When working with Lumira, we noticed that there are not that many charts available to do any statistical analysis. for example No Control charts, Histogram, Gantt chart, Highlight Table. Hope Lumira can incorporate some of these features in later versions.

Great Addition to Reporting

SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is mostly used by the departments who put together reports for management but it is not used all the time by every department. The departments that I have experience using Lumira with are logistics, customer service, and procurement.
  • useful visualisations
  • not too much of a hassle to use (can figure out the program even if you don't have advanced training)
  • fully integrated with multiple data information platforms
  • expensive
  • the dashboard is too busy
Because of the cost of SAP BusinessObjects Lumira I would not recommend it wholeheartedly because I would expect the program to be a bit more refined (cleaner and easier to use UI) and to have more flexibility for the price. SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is great when you have to create a visual that will be used to demonstrate something that would otherwise be complicated to explain without just words or regular charts.

The principal business problems that we solved with SAP BusinessObjects Lumira was data visualization and BI analytics for finance in industry.
I'm computer engineer and I think this program helped me a lot to improve my skills In BI, data mining, etc. This programs helps a lot to solve the problems.
  • Easy to create dashboards without coding
  • Allows [you to] select Excel, delimited, HANA, SQL, Oracle, column date, number format, etc.
  • Can apply different filters to different visualizations, however compositions need to be changed.
  • Sharing features like publishing to team, BI platform and before publishing giving rights like controlling whether the receiver is only to view or edit to collaborate.
  • Make it more easy to use.
  • Creating custom measure is a bit time consuming.
  • No option to zoom in visualization room.
SAP BusinessObjects Lumira is more useful than another solution.

Working with Toyota, and all departments are using the tool. This was introduced by me in the org and people started preferring it over QlikView, but since the tool is restricted to 64 bit OS for developers, a few key users find this to be a hurdle, as they are still on 32 bit because some other tools in the organization don't work well on 64 bit OD.

The tool is widely used to addresses national sales compared to the market study, and the overall service division comparison for the timely servicing and parts sold.
  • Presentation of data the way we want
  • Bit easier to use compared to dashboard designer and QlikView
  • Can be published in the BO Enterprise and can be shared and scheduled the way required by the user
  • Restricted to 64 bit OS only
  • Getting new versions and new features every 2 / 3 months
  • Crashes if huge amount is data is selected to analyse

This is a great program to do initial visualization and analysis. Its simple enough that almost anyone can use it and be able to tease out some of the more detailed complexities of a dataset. It should cover all but the most complicated business scenarios and it has the advantage of close integration with SAP data sources. It's certainly worth a look by anyone considering a new visualization option.

I would note that it took a bit of horsepower on my system but that isn't unusual for visualization products such as this one. In general, the interaction was smooth but I would recommend running this with at least 8GB of RAM. It does run well under a virtual machine (Parallels, in this case).

  • Good for dumping it in and exploring the data.
  • Nice job of presenting options for visualization.
  • Decent output format.
  • Some of the dimension capabilities are buried under a weird menu system. One particular visualization required a particular order.
  • The online version is disappearing.
Well suited for initial data exploration. It takes a bit of getting used to but it has a relatively easy learning curve. They could really use some video lesson support for the product but please don't do the canned "non-examples" but go for some real interesting visualizations and then show how to build them.

We used SAP Lumira as the front-end reporting solution for a data warehouse built to support alumni development and advancement at a small Nova Scotia University. It addresses the problem of using Excel for reporting, when a much more flexible and visual solution is available.
  • I love how Lumira allows connections to many leading industry OLE databases and data marts. It provides a much simpler way of performing reporting straight from the data source, opposed to connecting to a flat file or spreadsheet.
  • The geo-overlaying and GIS capabilities of Lumira impressed me quite a bit. I thoroughly enjoyed playing around with the maps, and it was very useful for making insights into trends when the data was geodriven.
  • The UI made for an incredibly easy learning experience. Any business end user can use this tool, with little to no assistance from IT.
  • A little less ambiguity about certain functions may help. Perhaps when you hover over a button there could be a little info note that explains what the function does.
  • Arranging the dashboards and labels with more independence would be nice!
Very well suited anywhere from basic reporting for small businesses to advanced analytics used by departments in major enterprises. For very small data sets, Excel or something may work better - but if comfortable with Lumira it works great.

It is currently being used in the accounting department. It is being used to address the profitability of certain products that we offer. It is also being used to provide executive level management with summary dashboards. These dashboards allow management to see in real time what is happening with orders and production.
  • It has a little bit of a learning curve, but after some training it is a very powerful tool.
  • It makes understanding large data sets easier.
  • The dashboards are very intuitive.
  • It can be complicated to use.
  • I wish there was the ability to bring it into PowerPoint
I feel like it really shines when you can connect it live to the data set and see the dynamic updates.

We are SAP PartnerEdge partners. We develop data and visual extensions to extend the functionality of out-of-the box functionality. Currently we offer vSQL and vOLAP data access extensions. Both vSQL and vOLAP provide a visual interface to generate queries without having to know the SQL syntax.
  • Data access to disparate data sources.
  • Data mashup.
  • Ability to explore the data on desktop and schedule the scenarios on the server side to refresh the data real-time.
  • Trusted data.
  • Extensive mobile device support.
  • Add wow factors to data visualizations.
  • Performance improvements.
  • Native data acquisition capabilities.
  • More SDK support to extend it.
If the customer has a lot of SAP assets both transnational or historical data, connecting to SAP systems to explore the data may be much easier. Also the trusted data infrastructure that SAP offers may be crucial to many customers.

We are testing SAP Lumira as a vehicle for the Visual Crossing mapping plug-in. We are comparing it to other BI products such as MicroStrategy.
  • Lumira is easy to install and configure.
  • The extension technology works well, and it is easy to add new visualizations.
  • Lumira's joining capability seems weak, but perhaps that is because I am used to MicroStrategy which is very strong in this department.
  • Lumira can be unstable and crash from time to time.
  • Lumira's performance sometimes feels slow.
SAP Lumira is best suited for people who are looking for an easy-to-configure analysis tool that does beyond office basic such as Microsoft Excel.

I use it in my Intro to MIS course and students' feedback has always been positive. It opens their eyes to how easy yet powerful the visualizations help analyze data and find the answer they look for.
  • There are so many types of charts available and it can't be easier to switch from one to another.
  • The interface is simple and user friendly.
  • The charts are beautiful.
  • Should make it available to a 32 bit computer as well.
  • Should require at least 2 GB, not 4 GB.
  • Add option to either show or hide captions of the chart types.
It is well suited when you want to create a variety of simple beautiful charts.

It is currently being used within the Financial Reporting Space but if we purchase the full license then it may be used more broadly. It is used for ad-hoc insight of business questions (such as "what is affecting my product mix?") and also to create dashboards for more repeatable business questions (although Design Studio is favoured for this).
  • Ease of creating visualizations (drag and drop); also prompts you to use the right measures/dimensions in the right axes (making it intuitive for non-it/non-analysts).
  • Intuitive nature of the interface - if you know Excel, or more advanced software, getting to grips with Lumira is a breeze.
  • Sharing/publishing outputs.
  • As it runs on your machine, restrictions on data consumption are quite limiting.
  • Flexibility - would be nice to be able to have more flexibility/customization (scripting etc. like Design Studio); I understand that there are some add-ons available but these are not publicized very widely.
  • Unless using an analyst PC, it is extremely slow.
More appropriate for ad-hoc analyses and less for repeatable (design studio allows better creation of dashboards as more flexible). Lumira is very intuitive though so good for non-IT folk to build and share analyses.
